Baines (English education, U. of Toledo, Ohio) offers an argument for the use of multisensory techniques as a foundation strategy for teaching. Opening chapters examine how recent changes in leisure habits have changed the talents, skills and weaknesses that students bring to the classroom, and provide an overview of the history, milestones, and seminal studies in fields related to multisensory learning. Subsequent chapters describe research related to each sense--sight, sound, smell and taste, movement and touch--accompanied by proven multisensory lessons and samples of student work. The text concludes with a discussion on the value of including play as a component of learning. While the majority of the sample lessons appear geared toward high school-level classrooms, the concepts could be adapted by teachers working in all levels, from elementary through higher education.
