ACADEMICAL HISTORY OF PSYCODUNAMY, CHAPTER I. TIlE NAME. THE word PSYCODU~A.MY, which I have adopted instea.d of ANIMAL MAGNETISM, is derived from the Greek" -tvX'lJ," the soul, and" ovvap",," power. It means, accordingly, Power afthe soul, or of the intelligent principle of life. I have also substituted the verb to dunamise in lieu of to magnetize or mesrruwize i dunamiser for magnetizc?', &c. &c. : dropping the first radical, "psyco," by way of abbreviation. My reasons for making these changes are the followiflg : The old denomination of Animal l)[agnetism has been found improper, and in my opinion with good roason, by many persons, who, convinced of the necessity of substituting another name for it, have proposed succossively those of Menial or Animal Electricty, (Dr. Pigeaire, Petetin, &c. j) ~lt[esmcrism, (Dr. J~lliotson, Hev. Hare Townshenu, &c.;) Neurology, (Dr. Buchanan j) Patlwtism, (ReI" Laroy Sunderhmu;) Etherology, (Professor Grimos, &c.) But
