""An Introduction To The Design Of Beams, Girders And Columns In Machines And Structures: With Examples In Graphic Statics"" is a book written by William Henry Atherton in 1905. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the design of beams, girders, and columns in machines and structures. It covers the fundamental principles of structural mechanics, including the theory of bending, shear, and torsion. The book also introduces readers to the concept of graphic statics, which is a graphical method used to solve problems in structural engineering. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which covers a specific topic related to the design of beams, girders, and columns. The first chapter provides an overview of the basic principles of structural mechanics, while the second chapter focuses on the design of simple beams. Subsequent chapters cover more complex structures, including girders and columns. Throughout the book, Atherton provides numerous examples and illustrations to help readers understand the concepts he presents. These examples are drawn from real-world engineering problems, making the book especially useful for students and practicing engineers. Overall, ""An Introduction To The Design Of Beams, Girders And Columns In Machines And Structures: With Examples In Graphic Statics"" is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the design and analysis of structures. Its clear explanations and practical examples make it an accessible introduction to the field of structural engineering. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. For in all machines and structures beams appear in one form or another ;and little progress can be made in scientific designing without a proper understanding of the principles or fundamental facts underlying their construction. Hence great prominence is rightly given to this subject in all courses of applied mechanics, machine and building construction, and naval architecture. The following chapters, based on articles originally contributed toT heM echanical World, deal in an elementary manner with the main principles and considerations involved in designing beams and columns of such forms and materials as commonly occur in machines and structures. Although points of mathematical intricacy have been intentionally avoided, my aim has been to make the treatment thorough, within the limits prescribed, and the mode of presentation such as can be easily understood. On questions of fundamental importance I have aimed at going to the root of the matter, giving full proofs of the leading formulae :while on points of less significance I have touched but lightly. The diagrams interspersed throughout the text are very numerous, and include examples illustrative of the graphical method of estimating the stresses in the several members of braced girders. A long experience, not only in the lecture-room but also in the designing and estimating offices of several large engineering works, has taught me the great value of numerical examples in imparting clearness of view and facility in applying principles to practice.
