General Lectures on Electrical Engineering is a book written by Charles Proteus Steinmetz and published in 1918. The book is a collection of lectures that Steinmetz gave at the University of Michigan in 1916-1917. The lectures cover a wide range of topics related to electrical engineering, including the history of electricity, electromagnetism, electric circuits, transformers, motors, generators, and transmission lines. Steinmetz’s lectures are highly technical and aimed at advanced students of electrical engineering. However, the book also includes a number of practical examples and illustrations that make the material more accessible to readers with some background in the field. Overall, General Lectures on Electrical Engineering is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history and theory of electricity, as well as for students and professionals in the field of electrical engineering. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Preface HE following lectures onE lectrical Engineering are general in their nature, dealing with the problems of generation, control, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric energy; that is, with the operation of electric systems and apparatus under normal and abnormal conditions, and with the design of such systems; but the design of apparatus is discussed only so far as it is necessary to understand their operation, and so judge of their proper field of application. Due to the nature of the subject, and the limitations of time and space, the treatment had to be essentially descriptive, and not mathematical. That is, it comprises a discussion of the different methods of application of electric energy, the means and apparatus available, the different methods of carrying out the purpose, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of the different methods and apparatus, which determine their choice. It must be realized, however, that such a discussion can be general only, and that there are, and always will be, cases in which, in meeting special conditions,, conclusions regarding systems and apparatus may be reached, differing from those which good judgment would dictate under general and average conditions.
