Excerpt from The Reign of the Emperor Probus
This essay deals chie?y with the Reign of the Emperor Probus. But the essential preliminary to an investigation of the reign of any emperor who ruled between a.d. 117 and 285 is an exam ination of the Augustan History, and therefore considerable space has necessarily been devoted to a discussion of the views which have been put forward, from time to time, by so many scholars. The controversy as to the date and authenticity of the Augustan History has been maintained chie?y by German, Italian and French scholars, and, so far as I am' aware, no monograph dealing with the subject has yet appeared in England. Miss Orma Fitch Butler, of the Oxford College for Women (ohio), in Studies in the Life of Helioga balus has recently discussed the question of the authorship of the Augustan History. The conclu sions to which I have come were arrived at before I had had the advantage of seeing her work.

This book delves into the turbulent period of Roman history spanning from the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius to the rise of Diocletian, with a particular focus on the life and reign of Emperor Probus. It explores a time marked by political instability, military dominance, and a series of short-lived emperors who struggled to maintain control amidst internal strife and barbarian incursions. The author meticulously examines the historical context of this era, highlighting the decline of senatorial power and the rise of militarism as defining characteristics. The book sheds light on the challenges faced by emperors like Probus in their attempts to restore order and stability to a fractured empire. By drawing upon various sources, including inscriptions, coins, and the works of ancient historians such as Zosimus and Aurelius Victor, the author provides a comprehensive account of Probus' reign and the broader political landscape of the time. Thematic explorations delve into the complexities of imperial power, the role of the military in Roman society, and the factors that contributed to the empire's decline. The author critically assesses the reliability of historical sources, particularly the Augustan History, and navigates the ongoing scholarly debate surrounding its authorship and authenticity. Ultimately, this book offers valuable insights into a pivotal period of Roman history, illuminating the challenges of leadership, the consequences of unchecked military influence, and the enduring legacy of Emperor Probus in the face of a declining empire.
