9781440065989: A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language (Classic Reprint)

Inhaltsangabe

Written by James W. Redhouse, A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is an instructional textbook intended for language learners and a valuable tool for those looking to learn Ottoman-Turkish.

A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is structured much as you would expect an instructional text on grammar to be. The opening sections are dedicated to introducing the learner to the letters and orthography of the language. Phonetic pronunciations are provided in English, and English is of course used as the language of explanation throughout the text. The second part of the book is devoted to vocabulary and accidence. The largest part of the text, as the name of the book suggests, is dedicated to instructing the reader on Ottoman-Turkish grammar rules. The conjugation of verbs is vital to learning any language, and thus the greatest portion of this book is dedicated to this topic. The book concludes with a discussion of Ottoman syntax, and the great differences between written and spoken Turkish.

James Redhouse has created a fairly complete introduction to Ottoman-Turkish grammar. The book is presented in a logical style and demonstrates the information in an easy to digest fashion. Unfortunately, this text does not contain any study exercises, so those looking to practice the grammar taught in this book will need to look elsewhere.

Readers should be aware that Ottoman-Turkish is not the Turkish of modern Turkey. However, if you are still interested in learning the Ottoman-Turkish language, specifically the grammar rules, A Simplified Grammar of the Ottoman-Turkish Language is a valuable tool.

Ottoman Language, A.jjLJ l2-c osmanlija, is the most highly polished branch of the great Turkish tongue, which is spoken, with dialectic variations, across the whole breadth, nearly, of the middle region of the continent of A sia, impinging into Europe, even, in theO ttoman provinces, and also, inS outhern Russia, up to the frontiers of the old kingdom of Poland. The Ottoman language is, in its grammar and vocabulary, fundamentally Turkish. It has, however, adopted, and continues more and more to adopt, as required, a vast number of A rabic, Persian, and foreign words (G reek, A rmenian, Slavonic, Hungarian, I talian, French, English, c.), together with the use of a few of the grammatical rules of the A rabic and Persian, which are given as Turkish rules in the following pages, their origin being in each case specified.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricacies of Ottoman Turkish, a refined branch of the vast Turkic language family spoken across Asia and parts of Europe. While rooted in Turkish grammar and vocabulary, Ottoman Turkish incorporates a rich tapestry of words and grammatical rules from Arabic, Persian, and other languages, creating a fascinating linguistic mosaic. The author meticulously dissects the Ottoman alphabet, tracing its origins back to ancient Phoenician characters and highlighting its shared heritage with Greek and Latin alphabets. This deep dive into the alphabet's history illuminates the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate languages and cultures. Beyond mere vocabulary and grammar, the book explores the unique rules of Ottoman euphony, demonstrating how pronunciation shapes the language's elegance and rhythm. By delving into the complexities of vowel sounds, consonant values, and orthographic signs, the author reveals the hidden beauty and sophistication of Ottoman Turkish. Ultimately, this book offers a profound appreciation for Ottoman Turkish as a language that masterfully blends diverse linguistic elements into a harmonious and expressive whole. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
