The following work was commenced;in the year 1828, and has been sklce continued, with various interruptions. The A uthor, having in the interval visited every county in I reland, has had opportunities of becoming acquainted with the provincial dialects of the language, as now spoken ;and he has therefore notieed their more remarkable peculiarities, wherever they appeared to throw light on the Rules of I rish Grammar. He has also introduced copious examples from the remains of the ancient language still preserved in manuscript; a source of information peculiarly important, not only as preserving the original inflexions and forms of the language, but also because it has been hitherto almost entirely neglected by his predecessors, who, with the exception of Haliday, have all taken their examples from the modern vernacular I rish.
