That Christian missionary efforts have long gone hand-in-hand with European colonization and American imperialist expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is well recognized. She co-chairs the World Christianity Group of the American Academy of Religion. She is coeditor ofEvangelical Postcolonial Conversations: Global Awakenings in Theology and Praxis (2014).

Mitzi J. Smith is associate professor of New Testament and early Christian studies at Ashland Theological Seminary, Detroit. She has contributed to The Women"s Bible Commentary, Onesimus Our Brother (Fortress Press, 2012), and True to Our Native Land (Fortress Press, 2007), and written The Literary Construction of the Other in the Acts of the Apostles (2011).
