Chapter One

I really did not know what college I would attend from High School. I was more interested in playing football than anything else. While I was in the eleventh grade, my parents and my best friend Bee thought it would be a good idea to go on the black college tour to help us decide on the most important decision in our young lives. The black college bus trip was sponsored by Bee's church so we were told to be on our best behavior. I took a look at the girls on the bus and began to laugh at the idea that with all these girls on this trip that any of 10 guys on the bus would be on their best behavior. To give a better idea of what I thought was funny about the number of guys to girls. 50 people 35 girls and 5 praying adults. I remember leaving Washington D.C. And hearing my parents saying, "be good" Bee, and I are looking at each other and pointing at the girls which we wanted to be good to. We are on our way to Park and Tellman college you would have thought that we would be singing "Amazing Grace" but instead we were listening to Zapp's smash hit "I WANT TO BE YOUR MAN". The coolest thing happened when the song went off. Every one on the bus banged on the left leg then once on the right and then rubbing their hands together twice. 50 people doing that on the beat sounded better than the beat in the song. Even then I remember watching Roger Troutman singing through a tube that he was way ahead of his time. So some years later Hearing Tupac and T-Pain using Auto tune, I thought back to Zapp's late Roger Troutman. We finally get to Shark College in Atlanta middle of the summer so it's blazing hot. We were paying more attention to the girls at the University than all of the information that Chaperones were telling us about the school. My parents thought that this would be a good way for me to get a taste of college before I made a decision on which school to go to and that was a good idea. Next we separated from the girls who took a shuttle bus to Tellman. The girls got in a station wagon and we took a shuttle bus to Porehouse an all boys school. I like Porehouse University but attending an all boys' school does not fit the party atmosphere that I think the school that I select should incorporate. It's time to go back to the hotel but all I kept thinking about was this dark-skinned girl named penny. Now Penny is sexy but what I like about her is her lips. She keeps putting on this Mac lip-gloss and she has on Liz Claiborne perfume now I am not knowledgeable about all the fragrances but I am digging that smell. So Penny tells Bee, "she has some liquor and that we should drink it on the balcony so that the chaperones don't catch us." So Bee and I are trying to figure out what type of liquor penny has in her purse. I am thinking some Hennessey cause, I seen a bottle of the dark stuff at my Dads bar in the basement. Now Bee is thinking a little more practical thinking she probably has a 6 pack of Budweiser or a 64 bottle of private stock and it would-be fun cause, we could figure out the riddle on the cap. Wouldn't you know we were both wrong she pulls out big bottle of strawberry Boones farm. She has a girlfriend with her named Tonisha now let me tell Tonisha has been staring at me, and Bee is convinced that I could hit that. We start drinking and everybody starts to get truthful in between drinks penny tells bee, "that she likes him and would like to talk to him when we get back top to D.C." So know Tonisha feels the need to get truthful with the Breakfast Club saying, "she has a crush on one of the male chaperones." I started drinking that sweet Boones farm a little faster feeling left out and no one cares. So we have to get back to our rooms because that the chaperones make room checks. The next morning we get on the bus and wouldn't' you know it penny and lee are sitting next to each other and Tonisha's grown ass is sitting next to Mr. Tommy who is looking like her dad. We are on our way to Big State better known as Sirginia State University. After that we will go to Campton University and little state or better known as Worfolk State University and in my mind the choice is between Campton and Worfolk State University. Now my criteria should be about the course s and getting the best education. Instead of those serious factors I am thinking about what my sister Karon said, "who told me that Campton University had some good grits and corn beef hash." I heard through the grapevine that Worfolk State is building a new stadium which will cost around 10 million dollars. We go to Campton University first the girls there were so fine I couldn't' even tell you the name of the University wow! Next we make a pit stop at Worfolk State University me and Bee notice that some kind of construction is going on so its looks like the grapevine was pretty accurate. Lee and I walked out on to the field thinking this would be the place where we dominate on Saturdays if we choose to attend Worfolk State. It was at this moment I decided I would attend Worfolk State University it was a rap! We get back on the bus and wouldn't you know it we started hitting the Zapp's beat and just like when we first got on the bus everyone is in sync. Going back home I don't think we really realize what a big impact that Worfolk State would play in our lives.

Bee is a first team, all conference linebacker, and he calls me with excitement in his voice like something big just happened. He tells me, "he has a partial 2-year scholarship to Mepherd's College in West Virginia." I am thinking to myself West Virginia are you serious. Now Mepherd's College was not on the black college tour or even close. Mepherd's College is 99% white which doesn't' even do it justice, they have 12 black people on the campus. Now mind you 6 of the 12 are parents who are continuing their education taking classes on the weekend. The next week I received a letter from you guessed it Worfolk State University but this letter says, "Worfolk State is unable to offer me a scholarship." Now directly underneath the Worfolk State letter was a letter from Mepherd's college offering me a partial 2-year scholarship. So I called Bee and told him the news even though I really wanted a full ride at Worfolk State University. Of course we are excited about going to the same college and playing on the same defense so we are going up there together. Now Mepherd's College is in the mountains at a very high altitude in the mountains where the air is really thin. We are sitting by the front desk waiting to be assigned to a room. Some of the guys who were checking in were carrying what looks like bags of clothes, but later we find out, they are carrying weed in these bags. There was some confusion about this early in the day.

My mom said, "they must have tons clothes." My dad gives me 50 dollars and tells me, "you have to take care of your money cause, we can't send you money every 5 minutes". Our parents depart and we make our way to our rooms to get some rest cause we have 3 a day practices starting early in the morning. So I walked past the room of one of the guys who was carrying the dark bags, and I think I started to smell weed. This guy named Roscoe asked me, "if I wanted to come in and smoke with him." I am like, "hell yes," so I enter the room, and he puts a towel at the base of the door after he put some water on the towel. He cracked open a window, and we began to put our finger on the shotgun hole and take deep pulls from this...
