NOTES Descriptive Selections Point of View The first group of six specimens is designed to illustrate Point of View in Description, in its literal sense of a place from which one sees objects, and in its figurative signification of a mental attitude or state whereby things undergo certain modifications in the perception. The importance of a definite point of view in describing lies in the control which such a point of view exercises over observed objects in the matter of order, scale, definiteness and number of details, and general outline, and in many cases in the quality of the impressions received. The Ranch.--What has the point of view to do here with the order of observation? How does it aid in the management of the details? Does it serve any purpose in securing unity of impression? Note the successive stages of the description, the effect of progressiveness throughout. A Glimpse Of Old Paris.--What is the order of observation here, as revealed by the second paragraph?
