Born at Bremen, Feb. 4, 1776; died Feb. 16, 1837. German naturalist. He was one of the early workers in biological fields, and one of the first to suggest the name "biology" for that science. Between 1801 and 1803 he ran road locomotives about London, carrying passengers.
