I admit I've only watched the television show based on this series, but now I see how Essie Davis was able to breathe life in to one of my favorite fictional characters, Phryne Fisher, it's all there on the page!...Great characters, great plot!
--Tracy Jacobson "NetGalley "Phryne Fisher is my favorite flapper! Her outfits are shocking, her morality questionable, and her quick wit and intellect unstoppable. She lives a most unconventional lifestyle, and she owns it! The historical details in Greenwood's series are well-researched, and Phryne's extensive and oh-so-stylish wardrobe is described beautifully. This was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery, and I would recommend the series to anyone looking for a good read - regardless of whether you typically read historical fiction, you'll love Phryne.
--Rachel Ratliff "NetGalley "And much as I enjoyed the episode based on this book, I'm kind of happy to say I enjoyed the book more. Characters' motivations were clearer, and the extra time I got to spend with them was appreciated. And there was no wombat in the episode....The adventure into the Australian Alps and Phryne's time there (note the tap-dancing to avoid spoilers) were wonderful. "I've got a dog and a horse and all the silence in the world." I want that ... I really want that, "Lovely and high and far away."
--Tracey Stewart "Library Thing "Kerry Greenwood is excellent at describing fabrics and dcor so it is really easy to imagine the settings and of course her ability to write a good story is second to none.
--Carolyn McVicker-Wilson "NetGalley "Phryne Fisher is such a great character! Fans of the TV series will certainly enjoy this book, particularly since the plot veers off from the episode based on it. I could read about Phryne's exploits all day!
--Sara Duff "NetGalley "The Green Mill Murder Phryne Fisher #5 (Phryne Fisher Mysteries) by Kerry Greenwood is an entertaining mystery. It kept my attention from start to finish. I gave it four stars. I will look for more Phyrne Fisher books to read since I enjoyed the character.
--Carolyn Injoy-Hertz "NetGalley "Love the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries on PBS. The Green Mill Murder by Kerry Greenwood gives more depth to the characters, the times, and the mysteries. Interest bits that aren't featured in the TV shows. Very enjoyable read. Looking for more in the book series.
--Irene McIntosh "Goodreads "Kerry Greenwood has done it again. In the Honorable Phryne Fisher's fifth outing in The Green Mill Murder, one of the contestants in a dance marathon collapses after having been stabbed in the heart and Phryne literally trips over him.... The book is so excellent I devoured it in less than 24 hours. You won't regret another outing with the fabulous Phryne.
--Ivonne Rovira "Goodreads "This is a fun, lighthearted read although it has its serious side with its informative discussion on the after effects of trench warfare. Ms. Greenwood is very successful in conveying the absolute horror of it without destroying the tone of the novel, an amazing feat....I thoroughly enjoyed The Green Mill Murder and have no hesitation in recommending it as a welcome addition to the series and a good read.
--Tomasso Elaine "Goodreads "I very much enjoy watching the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries on TV, but have not, until now, managed to actually get around to reading any of Kerry Greenwood's novels featuring the stylish sleuth. This is obviously a big mistake on my part, as I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of murder and mystery "Down Under..".. this is an excellent read that keeps you guessing from beginning to end.
--Mike Godfrey "Goodreads "Phryne Fisher is doing one of her favorite things - dancing to the music of Tintagel Stone's Jazzmakers at the Green Mill, Melbourne's premier dance hall. And she's wearing a sparkling lobelia-colored georgette dress. Nothing can flap the unflappable Phryne - especially on a dance floor with so many delectable partners. Nothing but death, that is.
The dance competition is trailing into its last hours when suddenly a figure slumps to the ground. Phryne, conscious of how narrowly the weapon missed her own bare shoulder, back, and dress, investigates.
Phryne follows the deadly trail into the dark smoky jazz clubs of Fitzroy, into the arms of eloquent strangers, and finally into the sky, as she uncovers a complicated family tragedy from the Great War and the damaged men who came back from ANZAC cove.
