Introduction to Western Concert Music connects the music of a particular time and place within the scope of the ideas and beliefs circulating in that time and place. By illustrating such connections, readers come to an understanding of music as a social as well as sonic experience.

Featuring a textbook, study guide, and 5 CD package, Introduction to Western Concert Music:

• Looks to the societies that gave rise to the music, to the music itself, and to the world of ideas swirling around the music.
• Explains the difference between formal and informal music knowledge, and how to move beyond appreciation and explore music as an interactive feat in society.
• Uses contemporary activities, experiences, and genres to describe the fundamental technical elements, vocabulary and concepts of music.
• Provides a historical overview of stylistic periods of music and society from ancient and Medieval times to postmodernism in contemporary society.
