Chapter One

    WORDS

    Now
words have fallen on hard times
    First
    we could not speak
    words were property
    of others
    claimed
    Then
    we said no one owns
    words
    they dance in the freedom
    of utterance
    invisible choreography
    Words
    alight on us
    vagrant birds
    touching us with logic
    with madness
    sometimes it flees
from us, rages in the night
turning on us to destroy meaning

    WORDS

    words
    conscripted to clock-time
    forced to march in step
    black with anguish
    strangled at birth

    poems
    stampeding
    rushing over cliffs
    drowning like lemmings

    language
    clipped/wings
    saddled/penned
    hang-dog
    buried alive

    AFTER WORDSWORTH

    after wordsworth

    chained time circles back
      attacks
    watches tick
    clocks mutter
      plot our destruction
    assassinate our dreams
    mount commando raids
      on quiet afternoons
    invade our tents
    harass the trees
    whip the gardens
    take us prisoner
    this angry time
      pretends absolutely
      simulates/dissimulates
      the movements of the stars
      is rational autocratic
      brooks no interruptions
      makes plans

    being guerrillas
we imagine a utopia of eternity

    NEW AGE LECTURE

    these bones
    don't cry
    their telling
    is a dry husk
    wind
    passes them by
    without a sound

    our histories
    evaporate in the sun
    the words of our life
    belong to others
    see us in the market-place
    greet us as strangers

    this performance
    for the hidden camera
    is winning
    collapsing events
    into sequences
    slides shots
      specks
    on a flat horizon
    brightly comprehensible

    WORDS

    words
    are sad
    wear black
    are in mourning

    once we spoke
    to ravens to whales
    our words howled
    with wolves
    warbles in crevices
    whispered with cicadas
    hummed the prayers of
    lions feeding
    leaning holy sounds
    words remembered
    psalms/orisons/anthems

    these letters
    are overburdened
    their courage fails
    they falter
    wander in exile
    wear black
    disguised amid barbarians

    DON'T

    don't speak to me
    my tongue is swollen
    with meaning
    my eyes know words
    they cannot utter
    my ears compose
    syllables
    phrases of desire
    choke my blood

    "don't"
    says a thing
    there is a surfeit
    of language
    my body is gorged with
    alphabets
    my sweat smells of
    letters

    don't open your mouth
    or
    this body will surrender
    then
    we'll drown
    we'll scatter in the wind
    a tornado

    ABORIGINE

    I am an aborigine
    i travel light
    wearing my words
    on my back
    speechless in diners
    these words are held
    aloft by mythologies

    i'm a tiger of language
    phrases crouch/spring
    from thickets
    wrecking set tables
    startling guests

    these utterances
    are not
    well-behaved
    are not
    socially acceptable
    are not
    politically correct
    wear no clothes
    dance naked in the streets
    sing loudly on solemn occasions

    my words
    are drunk
    stagger into mellow
    evenings
    sprawl on the grass
    horribly in love

    I DREAM

    I dream a language
    words striking hugely
