Shapiro introduces functional analysis to mathematics students who have completed solid first courses in linear algebra and analysis. By the end, they will be acquainted with two famous theorems that are often stated--but rarely proved--in graduate courses. The first is the Titchmarsh Convolution Theorem, which characterizes the null spaces of Volterra convolution operators. The second is the Volterra Invariant Subspace Theorem, which asserts that the only closed invariant subspaces of the Volterra operator are the "obvious ones."
