Concini and Procesi provide a unified, complete, and self-contained exposition of the main algebraic theorem of invariant theory for matrices in a characteristic free approach. They focus on the general symbolic theory, and do not discuss special theorems and computations nor applications to non-commutative algebra--referring readers to recent or forthcoming publications. In particular, they avoid the use of algebraic geometry and results on the cohomology of line bundles over the flag variety that are the standard approach to the theory.
