CHAPTER 1

Gifted


I sat all alone, accompanied only by the trees of the surroundingforest and its animal inhabitants. The darkness looms in everydirection, seemingly never ending. Occasionally, I can catcha brief glimpse of the full moon and star filled sky through theoverlapping branches that rest high above my head. It won't bemuch longer now; soon, they will all be joining me here.

My name is Sarah, and I am the youngest member of theBarton family. My mother and father both have what is commonlyreferred to by those of our kind as "gifted" blood. They passedon their gift to me and my older sister. My parents, just as theirparents before them, have taught my sister and me to embracethe powers that we have been blessed with. We have been broughtup to appreciate and respect the gifts that we have inherited. Ofcourse, we are not the only gifted family by any means; it is fairlycommon amongst our town to find gifted ones. My dearest friendswhom I have grown up with over the years have magic runningstrong throughout their veins as well. My family, like others in thissmall town where we reside, has different beliefs than most of theother gifted ones in existence.

Our families were taught to use the powers within ourselvesrather than relying on the things found in Mother Nature ormaterial objects. We believe only in using the power found withinour own bodies and minds. We have been taught how to directour focus and concentration to manipulate the energy around usand use it to our advantage when needed. The more of us thereare focusing together in sync the more powerful we become as awhole, feeding off each other's energy.

Some of what we can do has nothing at all to do withour powers; it's just that we are so much more aware of oursurroundings. Our heightened senses allow us to pay much closerattention to detail than most common people. Part of our keenability is to sense even the slightest changes in the air aroundus; sometimes it's just a temperature fluctuation, or an increasein the moisture in the air. Even something as simple as thearoma emanating from another person, plant, or animal we takeimmediate notice to.

There are others, however, who use their gifts to create potionsand spells, though they mean no harm. They only wish to continuepracticing magic by the old laws. Their belief that any magic theycreate will be returned to them threefold discourages them fromperforming anything less than the purest magic. We refer to themas the originals and respect their beliefs. We don't judge them forthe way they choose to live or practice their magic.

Besides ourselves and the originals, there are others—knownas evil ones, who ban together in covens and believe that theyhave been given power simply because they are stronger, superiorto the common people. These are the ones who hold no respectfor our gifts and allow it to run like flames through their bodies,consumed with greed and always thirsting for more power. They'refilled with anger and hatred for anyone who refuses to believe theirway. The evil ones who belong to these covens usually live livesof isolation, away from the common people that they look downupon. It is because of them that all of our kind is hated and forcedto be secretive about our beliefs.

The original coven of our kind is the only "coven" that wespeak of. They are the ones of our kind to first settle here fromacross the seas so very many years ago. Our beliefs stem from thestory of the prophecy created by the original coven, which servesas a lesson to us all that nothing good can come from the creationof magical things, no matter how well intended. Which is why ourkind practices and believes the way that we do.

Unfortunately, the common people fear us all because of thedarkness of the covens. "Witches" they call us. They can't see thedifference between the good and evil...
