The author, L. David Mark (aka Larry David Mark), grew up on a dairy farm near Council Bluffs, Iowa. An Iowa State University graduate, after working for the Nebraska Farmer magazine, he moved to northern Virginia in 1961 to be an information officer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There he provided information support for the successful program to eradicate hog cholera, a costly swine disease. From 1972 to 1997, he was an information officer for USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), playing a key role in establishing the agency’s website. For 3 years after retirement, he provided part-time information support for the United States Animal Health Association. The author and his wife live in Springfield, Virginia. They have two children and eleven grandchildren. Mark has an avid interest in soccer – since 1990 he has been League Director for U-19 girls soccer with the Springfield/South County Youth Club. “Curious Yonah,” a chapter about a grandson’s mishap with a potted plant, was published in the Washington Post on Feb. 20, 2008.
