This idea behind this book came from an exercise during a graduate ethics class (ALOP 249) at Drake University. The class was part of the Adult Learning and Organizational Performance (ALOP) Master’s program – a multidisciplinary program designed mostly for emerging and experienced leaders in business, human resources management, training and development, and higher education. All class participants were asked to draft a memo to their children or to other significant people in their lives. It was a powerful moment. It struck me as I heard each memo that we all had so much in common – love for our children, concern for doing what’s right, hope for an ethical future. Another powerful exercise was the development of personal “Codes of Ethics” - and the discussion of what these Codes meant for our professional and personal lives. We felt that these documents – the memos and the Codes – were worth preserving – for the class, for our families, and for other students coming after us.
