Edward S. Ellis is best known for his youth-targeted fictional works in the American dime, pulp, and series novel genre like "Seth Jones or The Captives of the Frontier" (described as the "perfect dime novel" of thrilling frontier adventure -- estimated 60,000 copies in its first week and 450,000 copies in its first six months), "The Huge Hunter or The Steam Man of the Prairies" (first U.S. science fiction dime novel) and the series featuring Native American: Deerfoot. Later in life he turned to more serious work, writing accounts of historical events and biographies, mostly for adults. He passed away in Maine in 1916 at the age of 76 after authoring hundreds of books that he produced by his name and by a number of pseudonyms including James Fenimore Cooper Adams, Captain Bruin Adams, Boynton M.
