Since the 1970s, the corrections system has experienced exponential growth. Over the past four decades, the number of inmates held in US prisons and jails has quadrupled. �ber die Autorinnen und Autoren

Carly M. Hilinski-Rosick is assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Tampa.

John P. Walsh is assistant professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Grand Valley State University. His research interests include the reciprocal relationship between communities and the criminal justice system. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Walsh has also served as a Chicago Police Officer and as a policy analyst with the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Daniel R. Lee is professor of criminology and criminal justice at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Emily Lenning is professor of criminal justice at Fayetteville State University.
