Inhaltsangabe

Statistics: Concepts and Examples by Michael M. Nikoletseas, Ph.D. is a groundbreaking introductory textbook designed to demystify statistics for students, philosophers, and scholars in the humanities. Breaking away from traditional, formula-heavy manuals, this book requires only high school arithmetic to master complex statistical methods. By focusing heavily on intuitive understanding rather than mechanical memorization, it transforms a notoriously dry subject into an engaging, narrative-driven journey that bridges the gap between empirical science and philosophical inquiry.

About the Book

Unlike typical math textbooks that force students to work blindly with formulas, this text prioritizes a conceptual approach. Through creative formatting, personified concepts (like the Goddess Normal Curve), and dramatic “soap opera” scenarios, the author ensures readers understand statistical principles at a gut level. It serves as both a practical guide for data analysis and an intellectual addition to your personal philosophy.

Key Features

  • Concept-First Learning: Learn the logic behind data analysis before touching formulas, giving you the confidence to critically evaluate experiments.
  • Engaging Storytelling: Complex concepts like degrees of freedom and the t-test are introduced through memorable characters and stories.
  • Minimal Mathematics: Perfect for non-math majors—if you know simple high school arithmetic, you can master every chapter.
  • The 5-Formula Appendix: Features a streamlined guide detailing the only five simple formulas you need for all parametric statistics from college through postdoc work.

What You’ll Learn

  • The Fundamentals: Scales of measurement (nominal, interval, ratio) and the foundational role of the normal curve.
  • Core Statistical Tests: Step-by-step conceptual breakdowns of the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
  • Advanced Designs: Mastery of factorial designs, repeated measures, and complex split-plot designs without formula overload.
  • Philosophical Integration: A dedicated look into the definitions of Truth and Cause within experimental science and humanistic scholarship.
