He was previously Professor of Religion and Humanities at Reed College and then Dean of the College at Saint Michael's. He is the author of Mystical Monotheism: A Study in Ancient Platonic Theology (Brown University Press, 1991), The Mysticism of Saint Augustine: Rereading the Confessions (Routledge, 2005) and Contemplation and Classical Christianity: A Study in Augustine (Oxford University Press, 2013).
