When Anthony first sets foot in the Caribbean in the aftermath of the Second World War, in search of a new life full of adventure and romance with his young wife, Henrietta, he is struck by the knowledge that what he has is probably all men’s fantasy: a profitable family business, developments rooted in Caribbean history, and far more sunshine and clean air than he had in London. But even amidst this idyllic historical adventure filled with endless days of romance and sex, thrilling crime threatens the happiness of our new émigrés. Eldred, a bent policeman involved in cocaine smuggling, has it out for Anthony, and what with the shifty real-estate tycoon Jeremy Firestone trying to muscle in on Anthony’s family business, there seems nowhere left to turn. Anthony seeks refuge in a men’s fantasy of romance and sex at a wife swapping club, but even as he realises this is not the answer, his disillusioned wife Henrietta has found adventure and romance with Yakatit, one of the most talented young musicians in Caribbean history. All this drama is set against a backdrop of upcoming governmental elections, which the drugs cartels are eager to subvert with their own agenda. When a dramatic crime gets pinned on Anthony, time is short to prove his innocence. Will the dastardly plans of Eldred and Jeremy Firestone be revealed? Or will Anthony’s hopes of living a life of historical adventure come to an abrupt end? Check out the LOOK INSIDE FEATURE to find out.

In 1963, Robert was working for an American company, Britannica Films, on an educational film to be called The Islands of the Caribbean. Towards the end of the year he became engaged to Sally, the fashion editor of a top British women’s magazine. But when the film project fell through and he found himself out of work, he suggested to Sally that it might be fun when they got married to move to the British Virgin Islands on spec, even though they had no money and no job to go to. To his amazement, she agreed. Altogether they spent 25 years in the Caribbean, their main business being a yacht provisioning shop called The Ample Hamper, providing the steadily increasing numbers of visiting sailors with first-class food and drink. When they sold that business in 1988, they returned to England, where they started another business called Frolics of Winchester, making garden furniture and ornamental trelliswork, which was shown at the Chelsea Flower Show and elsewhere. When Robert and Sally sold Frolics, he published an academic book, The Phantom Voyagers, about Indonesian influence in Africa in ancient times; then - with free time once again – he began to look back fondly at the Caribbean, and settled down to write the novel Man Goes Bananas, which he hopes you will find informative as well as entertaining.
