CHAPTER 1

To The Wall

The night before the first day of November Humpty Dumpty hadn't been able to take his eyes off a comet with a sparkling fairy-dust-like tail as it shot across the dark sky. His intuition told him the menacing omen warned of disruptive turmoil about to enter his life.

The next morning Humpty awoke early and dressed with fastidious care. He prided himself on his dedication not to spoil his perfect attendance record at the hatchery — since early May rumors circulated he might be the up and comer in line for the general manager's job when his boss retired.

His single vanity had always been a gleaming, perfectly elliptical shell without even the most minute bump, mark, or scratch. He had a virile grace which attracted whistles and hand clapping from Eggville's younger female eggs.

After dawn on the fateful morning, his best black frockcoat with the Eggville Hatchery crest on the breast pocket wrapped around his shell, he walked out of the families' modernistic gray and red egg carton and looked up at the king's magnificent castle, the only four-story carton in the kingdom. I'm ruined, brought down and made low and ordinary, so commonplace it staggers my imagination."

He rubbed his eyes and looked again. A minute crack, a detectible flaw, a gruesome mutilation snaked its way down the middle of his shell. His exquisite exterior, the one feature which set him apart, showed an unsightly defect.

Humpty, in the grip of near out-of control panic, grabbed a ladder from the side of the carton and stumbled down the street to the ten-foot high brick wall that for centuries shielded Eggville from the red foxes and other ravenous creatures which roamed the dark forest.

He struggled up the ladder, crawled onto a white-stone ledge and sat down. By now wrinkles and rips dotted his prized frockcoat. He ran his shaking hand over the rough, dark fissure in his prized shell then looked down at the lighting-bolt-shaped fault a second and third time and
