Principle of Desire
Desire is the first of the seven principles you must have. Without desire, when those tough times come — and they will come — you will want to give up and quit. It is the principle of desire that drives you through those tough times, the desire to want something so bad that you make sacrifices. You keep going when you feel like quitting, but it is your desire for what you want that drives you through to success.
There once was a young man who was looking for the secret to success, and he met a highly successful person and asked him to teach him how to be successful. The successful man (teacher) stated, "Meet me at the beach at five in the morning and I will teach you."
As requested, the young man (student) appeared at the beach at the designated time the following morning.
The teacher stated, "Step out into the water ankle-deep." The student did as he was told.
The teacher said, "Good, now let's go waist-high in the water."
The young man begrudgingly did but began to feel he was wasting his time, that the exercises he was performing were of little value in teaching him how to be successful.
The teacher said, "Now go in up to your chin."
The student was seriously beginning to get upset and felt this was a total waste of his time, energy, and effort; the teacher was not truly sharing the secrets of success with him. So the student began to voice his thoughts and asked the teacher to show him how to be successful or stop wasting his time.
The teacher grabbed the student's head and shoved it under the water, holding him there, and the student began to fight and struggle for air. The teacher let him up to breathe.
Furious at the teacher, the student demanded, "Why did you do that?"
The teacher stated, "When your desire to succeed is as strong as your will to breathe, you will be successful."
Desire is a strong emotion. When we have a strong desire for something, we will not be denied. When we have desire, the universal intelligence that guides all things, pulls the desired thing, person, state of being, or element to be drawn inexorably like a magnet toward us. Our job is to prepare to receive the object of our desire into our lives. In the midst of pain, sacrifice, and commitment to our cause, we tend to fight through whatever adversity we are dealing with to satisfy our desire.
Olympic athletes are an excellent example of this. The training can be grueling, with ten- to fifteen-hour days over years, and they must work through pain and sometimes rehabilitation after painful injuries in order to accomplish their success. They forego fun and time with friends and family to accomplish their dreams. A driving desire is the core ingredient that pushes them through the pain and through the sacrifices that they so often need.
Sacrifices
Let's take a moment to understand the word sacrifice. Unwillingness and lack of courage and/or willpower to make the necessary sacrifices are often the killers of dreams. Many times the things we need to give up or let go of we choose not to. A dear friend once shared a quote that I often refer to: "We don't always want what we need." We often need to let go of the very things we don't want to let go of or give up on. We have to make these hard choices if we want that desired life.
If there is a person, place, or thing that inhibits you from reaching your true potential and is unwilling to assist or even encourage you in achieving your goals, this is one of those moments you may have to make a tough choice and sacrifice to remove or change the inhibiting factor involved in the situation. Sometimes it's bad or irresponsible spending habits; sometimes it's a drug or alcohol addiction; sometimes it's bad eating habits; and sometimes we have to move to a different place, giving up what is familiar and known to us. But this is where you really need to understand what's important to you as an individual. What are your ethical standards? What things do you value and place priority on? This is one of those areas where a wrong decision could be detrimental to you and your well-being. But only you can decide, and a decisive decision is necessary to move you forward to your dream life.
I once read a quote by Bill Gates, describing one of his guiding principles for making Microsoft so successful. He stated that he took massive decisive action on the decision he had to make. Some decisions you make will be right and some may be wrong, but the power lies in your deciding and then taking massive decisive action on it ... So evaluate yourselves and ask these most important questions:
• What are my desires?
• What are my passions?
• What are my values?
• What are my priorities?
• What are my ethical standards as they relate to my desired life?
• What sacrifices am I willing to make to reach my goal?
It is important to understand the answers to these questions. These answers will become the guiding barometer for those tough times. These questions will help you understand those things that may compromise your moral, business, and spiritual ethics as well as provide guidance to you in making the right decisions. You've surely heard the saying that a person who stands for nothing will fall for anything. So know your constitution, know what you will stand, fight, and sacrifice for.
I've found that many people don't know what their desires are. People always seem to tell us what they don't want, but if you listen closely, they never mention what they do want. People live their lives each day not recognizing the power they have over the moment, the power to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others whom they touch. Instead, they transfer their power to others to make the decisions for them. It is critical that you realize the power that you have in shaping your destiny.
God has given each of us a unique talent that is as specific to us as cells are to one's DNA. This talent, your gift, is to be shared with the world. It's your responsibility to develop your unique God-given gift. For some, it is easy to identify and develop that gift; others have to work at identifying and developing their gifts or talents.
Regardless of how easy or difficult it is to identify your gift, you must realize that you are unique to this earth and within you are precious jewels that only you are blessed to bestow upon others. For example, a diamond found in its natural state looks nothing like the diamonds we see in the jewelry stores. A diamond in its raw state looks like an ugly rock. Before it becomes that beautiful jewel, a diamond must go through a process. It should endure enormous pressure, fire, and heat. It must be developed. This is the same with your talent, your jewel.
To reach the full potential of your gifts, you must decide to develop those skills. It is a conscious decision to evolve and live our dream...
