Inhaltsangabe

Commander Roni and Willy can neither walk nor talk, but foil a terrorist plot. The terrorists are trained killers, but nothing could prepare them for Commander Roni and Willy. Occasionally, a new genre of writing comes along to give us new concepts and new understanding. Commander Roni, is the first novel in the Diifability Fiction genre. Whenever you learn something new, or find yourself in a new situation, you learn new concepts and metaphors that give you new and greater perspectives and abilities. When you become a caregiver, you learn about a world that most of us who walk and talk, and function in the ‘normal’ world, could never imagine. You learn about the power of hope and hopelessness. You learn about the strength of the human spirit, and you learn things that don’t fit into normal concepts of reality. I worked with children and adults with severe disabilities. These people often demonstrated abilities to control their minds, and to understand the world, in ways that were beyond me. Often, even their own parents were blind to these abilities. Some were even hostile when I suggested that their children might be able to do things we couldn’t, or understand the world in ways we had no way of making real. What I suggested violated ‘normal’ reality, yet, if you’ve been a caregiver, you know sometimes ‘normal’ reality isn’t big enough to include what you experience. When you lose ability, you gain compensating ability. You may not recognize the ability, nor its worth. It may not make sense in the ‘normal’ world. The rules in a walking, talking world, are made by people who know only the concepts of a walking, talking world. Commander Roni, is a tribute to people with different abilities and ways of understanding the world, and their families, caregivers, teachers and therapists. Commander Roni and Willy, are the main characters in this story. They discover a terrorist plot by a foreign government. They take on trained killers who have guns, but nothing could prepare them for Commander Roni and Willy. With no weapons and few resources, these two non-walkie-talkies assemble a team of other non-walkie-talkies, homeless veterans and other campers, to thwart the bad guys. Commander Roni and Willy inspire all they meet to believe in themselves and to reach for new heights. Commander Roni, may encourage those with different abilities to embrace their own uniqueness and reach beyond imposed limitations. Commander Roni, may bring smiles to family members and caregivers, remembering experiences they can’t explain that were dismissed as the result of exhaustion and stress. Commander Roni, recognizes and celebrates the potential of people who are different.

Commander Roni resulted from working with people with disabilities, more accurately diffabilities. I always suspected that these people could do things that were beyond my ability to understand. I met many kids with CP who performed feats of mind control matching the abilities of mystical gurus as if they were easy and completely normal. I felt that people locked-in from ALS learned amazing things they were unable to share. I always had a reverence for girls with Rhett Syndrome. It seemed to me that they transformed all negative emotions into pure love. Kids with autism gave me the impression that their minds worked so much faster than mine that dealing with me was like waiting for a snail to crawl up to the starting line. I worked with a little girl locked-in from ALD who seemed to me to be the oldest, wisest person I’d ever met. I’ve struggled for a way to make these things real within my limited concepts. That didn’t work, but they are the only concepts I have to work with. I always wanted to write a book about what I experienced with these amazing people, but I haven’t been able to find any concepts to make it real. So, I made up a story. The unlikely heroes of this story make this a new genre of fiction. Commander Roni inspires people who are normally excluded from society to do great things, working together. Most of the characters are people who are chronically homeless, or have abilities different than Walkie-talkies, people whose realities are oriented around walking and talking. These diverse people, who society treats as throw always, come together to stop a terrorist plot from a foreign government. They take on spies sent to carry out an insidious attack on America. The bad guys are trained killers, spies with guns and endless resources. They anticipated everything, except Commander Roni and friends. Nothing could have ever prepared them for what happened when they met Commander Roni and her big brother Willy. I have never had so much fun writing anything in my lifetime. C. Brahe
