Inhaltsangabe

A landmark of ancient Greek tragedy, Prometheus Bound presents one of literature's most enduring figures of defiance, suffering, and moral resistance. Traditionally attributed to Aeschylus, the play centres on Prometheus, the Titan punished by Zeus for giving fire and knowledge to humankind. Chained to a remote mountain and visited by divine agents, wandering victims, and a watchful chorus, Prometheus refuses submission, insisting that power without justice cannot endure. Severe, poetic, and philosophically charged, Prometheus Bound stands at the source of Western tragic drama. Its themes of tyranny, rebellion, foresight, divine authority, punishment, and human progress have echoed through classical literature, Romantic poetry, political thought, and modern theatre. For readers of Greek tragedy, mythology, ancient drama, and the literature of resistance, Aeschylus's vision of Prometheus remains stark, concentrated, and deeply influential.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Aeschylus was one of the foundational dramatists of ancient Greece and is widely regarded as a central figure in the development of Greek tragedy. Writing in the fifth century BCE, he helped shape the dramatic form that would influence Sophocles, Euripides, Roman tragedy, Renaissance theatre, and the later European literary tradition. His surviving plays are marked by solemn grandeur, moral conflict, religious seriousness, and a powerful sense of human beings caught between divine law, political authority, and fate. Works traditionally attributed to Aeschylus include The Persians, Seven Against Thebes, The Suppliants, the Oresteia, and Prometheus Bound.
