Inhaltsangabe

First Lensman reveals the moment when the Lensman concept becomes more than theory-and when individual destiny is irrevocably bound to the fate of the galaxy. As the hidden war shaping interstellar history intensifies Kimball Kinnison's training and experiences prepare him for a role no one has fully defined before. When he becomes the first human to operate as a true Lensman he steps into a position that carries immense power responsibility and danger. Armed with the Lens and guided by intelligences older and more far-reaching than humanity itself Kinnison begins to confront enemies whose plans span civilizations and whose influence cannot be met by force alone. E. E. "Doc" Smith deepens the Lensman saga by shifting focus from institutions and fleets to the transformation of the individual. Espionage infiltration and mental combat take center stage as the conflict moves into realms where secrecy and intelligence are as decisive as firepower. Each mission brings Kinnison closer to understanding that the war is not merely physical but evolutionary-testing whether emerging species are capable of wielding power without destroying themselves. First Lensman stands as a crucial bridge in the Lensman series marking the transition from organized defense to mythic guardianship and setting the stage for the epic escalation that will follow.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

E. E. Doc Smith (Edward Elmer Smith, 1890-1965) was one of the foundational architects of modern science fiction and the creator of the space-opera tradition as it is still understood today. Trained as a chemical engineer, Smith brought a unique combination of scientific imagination and narrative escalation to his fiction, forever changing the scale at which science fiction stories could operate. He is best known for the Lensman series, a sweeping saga of galactic conflict that introduced concepts now taken for granted in the genre: universe-spanning wars, hierarchies of advanced intelligences, escalating cosmic stakes, and heroes entrusted with authority beyond conventional law. Long before such ideas became common, Smith envisioned civilizations locked in conflicts measured not in nations or planets, but in entire galaxies.Though his work first appeared in the pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s, Smith's influence extends far beyond that era. The Lensman series directly shaped later generations of science fiction writers and helped define the narrative DNA of space opera, from epic military SF to modern cinematic franchises. His stories are remembered not merely as early examples of the genre, but as the moment when science fiction discovered how big it could be.
