On the 27th of January 1817 Jane Austen embarked upon her last novel. Sadly Jane did not live to complete the work. It is generally believed that the title was to have been The Brothers. Today the book is known by the name that the Austen family bestowed on it following Jane’s untimely death: Sanditon. Nobody knows how the novel was intended to develop. Many attempts have been made at completion. This is my own effort. That it can bear no relation whatsoever to Jane’s unknown intention is of course certain. In view of the eminence of the principal contributor it is hoped by the co-author that an inevitable deficiency of content and style on his part will be allowed for and forgiven, if at all possible. I deem my part of this work, the larger and yet so much the lesser, for reasons which might become apparent to the reader, to be no more than a fairy tale.
