This is the paradox of Bernie Sanders. From one angle, Sanders typifies an anti-establishment rabble-rouser. His hoarse voice complemented by a rumpled suit jacket and his unkempt hair gives the impression of an insurrectionist fresh off the barricades. From another angle, however, he epitomizes the establishment. He has been a Washington insider for a quarter of a century and held ranking positions on the Senate Budget Committee and Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. How does such a paradox compute? Ironically, the same sky-is-falling attitude that propelled Sanders into a lefty circle of peaceniks and utopians is what whisked him off to the halls of Congress. Sanders proves that individuals can sail from the fringe to the upper echelons, from anonymity to superstar status, without being corrupted, without resorting to mealy-mouthed platitudes.
