Tom’s school career at Rugby starts well, but he begins to lose his way, finding himself in many scrapes and difficulties with Flashman - the school bully, the masters, other boys, as well as local land-owners. Finally he appears before the Headmaster, Dr. Arnold, the man whom Tom fears more than anyone. Will the Doctor need to remove Tom from the school, or can he find a way to arrest Tom’s downward spiral of behaviour? The reader follows the action, and in the end Tom does have to leave Rugby, however not as a young, thoughtless boy, but as a strong, courageous and thoughtful man who has learned from the Doctor that there is an even greater Master yet. This Cameron Collectible volume is a full-length, unabridged edition, and includes a preface written by Thomas Hughes that is omitted by many other publishers. It is available only as a printed volume, (i.e. unavailable on kindle) and restricted to 2,000 copies worldwide. Thomas Hughes (1822 - 1896), was a student at Rugby School and wrote this classic work in the mid-1800s. Hughes later went on to write a sequel (Tom Brown at Oxford), and also became a Member of Parliament. Doctor Thomas Arnold is the only person in the novel who is a true historical figure, the other characters, Hughes said later, were composites of boys whom he knew at school.
