Enfin quand, en 1748, Maurice de Saxe se décide à aller chercher la paix dans Maestricht, Saint - Germain est chargé de remonter avec sa division la rive droite de la Meuse. 11 facilite de ce côté l'investissement de la place, et, détaché le long dela Geule, protège les assiégeants contre un retour offensif des alliés.

La promotion du 10 mai 1748 récompensaient le zèle et l'intelligence que le comte de saint-germain avait déployés dans cette guerre. Nommé pendant la paix commandant de la Basse Alsace, à Landau, puis en 1751 a Givet, il obtient en 1754 le com mandement du Hainaut.
