Une pareille étude peut comporter trois méthodes différentes.
L'une, de pure érudition, a envahi la littérature et n'a pas épargné la philosophie, qui lui doit d'ailleurs d'inappréciables services; elle établit les textes et fixe quelques détails intéressants de biographie et d'histoire. Elle consisterait ici à analvser minutieusement les découvertes récentes des infatigables chercheurs d'ou tre - Rhin, correspondances, notes manuscrites, anec dotes sur Kant, sa famille, ses amis, ses collègues; elle discuterait longuement les différences de texte qui exis tent, par exemple, entre les deux premières éditions de la Raison pure ou entre les deux préfaces de la Faculté de juger; enfin elle se risquerait dans l'inextricable la byrinthe des systèmes d'exégèse, d'interprétation et de critique qui ont fait de la bibliographie kantienne la plus toufïue de toute la littérature philosophique; elle ajouterait quelques épines à ces broussailles, et le livre qui en résulterait serait utile peut-être, ennuyeux probablement, et, sans aucun doute, interminable.
