Excerpt from Miscellanea Sacra, Vol. 3 of 3: Containing an Abstract of the Scripture-History of the Apostles, in a New Method; With Four Critical Essays: On the Witness of the Holy Spirit; On the Distinction Between Apostles, Elders, and Brethren, on the Time When Paul and Barnabas Became Apostles
Several of the patrons of revelation have laid more weight upon 1t than it can bear. For whereas revelation, as it was delivered by patriarchs or prophets, by Chrifi or his apofiles, was only pr0pofed in aid of natural religion, and recommended as highly ufeful; many fince have infified, that it is abfolutely necefl'ary, not barely to give us a title on which we may claim eternal life, as eternal life is defcribed in fcripture (which may be jufily {aid according to the doctrine of reve lation), but to fecure men from eternal dam nation, and to obtain any degree of the favour of God in another world. But as (0011 as perfons, to whom revelation is recommended as thus abfolutely nccefiary, come to fee that it is not (0, nor can be (0; as they foon will; it may very cafily happen that they will not trouble their heads any more about it; and, finding the Opinion that it is abfolutely necef fary a great extreme, may, without thinking farther (as indeed they ought), run into an other (as is but too common in thefe cafes), and think it entirely ufelefs.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book, originally published in 1759, is an early work of Biblical criticism, in which the author posits that the Old and New Testaments should not be interpreted literally (as had been the predominant view at the time), but rather as a collection of stories, poems, and moral lessons. The author's goal is to make Christianity more palatable to a skeptical 18th-century audience by providing a rational basis for faith. By presenting this new method of interpreting scripture, the author suggests that the Bible is not a historical document to be interpreted literally, but rather a collection of timeless stories with moral lessons that can be applied to any age. The author's work was hugely influential, eventually leading to entirely new approaches to Biblical studies in the 19th and 20th century.
