Excerpt from The Homiletic Review, Vol. 12: From July to December, 1886
Doubtless, as things now are, ministers' vacations must needs be. But, if necessary, they are a necessary evil. The pastor whose delight is in his labor looks forward to the approaching month of rest with like feeling to that with which the eager student, warned by droop ing eyelids and failing attention, watches the pointer moving on to the inevitable hour of bed time; and wonders why it is that vaca tions should be looked upon nowadays as a universal necessity, when, in the days of our grandfathers, the very word vacation was only a word for school-boys.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores how the Higher Criticism, a methodology used by scholars to study the Bible, has impacted various core Christian doctrines. The Higher Criticism methodologically assumes that Christianity developed over time as a natural phenomenon, in stark contrast to the traditionally held view that Christianity resulted from direct divine intervention. The author cites scholars like Crawford H. Toy, Herbert Spencer, and Huxley who argue that evidence suggests the Bible documents were written by multiple authors over time, not by the individuals or at the times traditionally ascribed to them. Through this lens, the author explores the implications for beliefs such as the virgin birth, the resurrection, and the divinity of Jesus Christ. This book will appeal to readers interested in the evolution of religious views and the ongoing debates surrounding the origins of Christianity.
