The basis of the work consists of two dictionaries, compiled by the author, one a rime~index to Hartman, the other a com plete dictionary for all the works except lwein, the dictionary of Benecke being used for the latter. Exhaustivenesa, it is thought, has thus been attained for all the categories treated. It will be found that even where these are not new, it has been possible in several instances to correct traditional errors. While the study was made mainly from the point of View of chronology, interesting phenomena have not been excluded simply because they did not yield to chronological treatment: marked divergence of usage has in every case been recorded. The work, it is hoped, will thus possess a value independent of its conclusions.
