Excerpt from The East Anglian, Vol. 6: Or, Notes and Queries on Subjects Connected With the Counties of Suffolk, Cambridge, Essex and Norfolk
In the reign of William Rufus he commanded the garrison at Mans, in which capacity Freeman several times mentions him, and we again hear of him as being a considerable benefactor to the monks of St. Saviour's, Bermondsey, in which church he was probably buried. He was the founder of a race of gentlemen of large possessions, who in the military and other professions acquired great reputation and honour. The county histories tell us that they were of eminent note in Kent and Essex, in which latter county they had Copt Hall for their residence, and as Philpot says, the head of their Barony.
