The crust around these depressions was forced upward, forming continents. This theory explains the peculiar shapes and positions of the continents, as well as the fact that many mountain ranges run parallel to coastlines. The author also discusses the role of waves in creating mountains and the different ways in which mountain ranges can be formed.
