Several different processes contribute to ionization in the normal D-region (50-85 km). Above 70 km ionization of NO by'lymanwa appears to predomi nate. Below about 70 km cosmic-ray ionization of air begins to'become important and below 60 km ionization by kav'x-rays ()l l R) and cosmic rays predominates.

This book explores a novel method to facilitate communication between ground stations during periods of high-altitude nuclear explosions or unusual solar activity. The author investigates the use of radio transmitters to decrease electron density in the D-region, which would otherwise amplify the effects of these disturbances. By analyzing ionospheric processes, conductivity of gases, and propagation of electromagnetic waves, the author derives equations that describe the nonlinear radial propagation of a powerful wave in an inhomogeneous medium, and obtains numerical solutions for its effects. The results show that a sufficiently powerful ground-based transmitter can generate significant change in the ionosphere, providing a channel of decreased electron density through which a second wave may propagate with greatly reduced attenuation. It concludes that this method has the potential to restore communication under these extreme conditions, highlighting the importance of the presented insights for maintaining reliable communication during times of disrupted ionospheric conditions.
