In the case of an electron tube the plate current supplied by the battery, B, is controlled by the potential of the grid with respect to the filament. (see fig. If the grid be maintained sufficiently negative With respect to the filament as it is with the battery, 0, no electrons Will flow to the grid. Under this condition the tube absorbs no power in the grid circuit. The grid will act simply as a control electrode and the relation between the voltage 0 and the corresponding plate current will, in general, be that shown in the curve in Figure 2. Over a portion of this curve the relation between grid potential and plate current is approximately linear.
