Excerpt from Index to St. Nicholas: A Complete, Comprehensive Index and Dictionary Catalogue to the First Twenty-Seven Volumes of St. Nicholas; Containing 20, 000 References Arranged Analytically, Alphabetically, and Classified
The belief that much valuable but unavailable material was contained in the St. Nicholas has led to the presentation to the public of this index to the first twenty-seyen volumes. No effort has been spared to secure its complete ness and accuracy and yet, that the volume might not grow unwieldy or cumbersome, care has been taken to render it as concise as possible. The utility of the present work will be appreciated more especially by those who are engaged in reference work and by the librarians of small libraries, who know by experience the difficulty of supplying the demand of study clubs, teachers and children.
The index is dictionary catalog in form, following closely the A. L. A. List of subject headings. However, that it might be more useful in the prepa ration of Special lists, etc., whenever there has been a large accumulation of entries under a heading the subject has been divided, z'. E.
