It consists essentially of a little bar of magnetized steel - called the mag netic needle - balanced on a pivot at the center so that it can move freely. Whichever way it is turned, the magnetic needle swings slowly around, and finally settles to rest with one end pointing nearly north and the other end nearly south. Knowing these two directions, the others can be easily determined.
