It is necessary to an intelligent discussion of the testimony to make a brief explanatory statement as to the general situa tion at Brownsville on the night of the affray.
The Government reservation known as Fort Brown is situ ated on the bank of the Rio Grande River immediately oppo site Matamoros, Mexico, and within the limits of the town of Brownsville, the principal streets and parts of which are im mediately north of the reservation.
The reservation is bounded on the northern side by a brick wall some 4 or 5 feet in height at the point where the principal part of the shooting affray is alleged to have commenced.
