Excerpt from Statement Made Before the Committee of the Legislative Assembly, on the University of Toronto: In Reply to Those of Rev'd Drs. Cook, Green, Stinson and Ryerson
The method of investigation adapted by the Committee has been, that each of the gentlemen appearing on behalf of those who have prayed for an enquiry, has put in as evidence a written statement of the facts and argu ments, by which he substantiates his objections to the present constitution and arrangement of the University. In conformity with this arrangement, before answering such questions as may be put to me, I desire to submit a reply on behalf of the University of Toronto, with a reference to such documents as I behave will aid the Committee in coming to a correct judgment upon the questions before them. If my reply should be thought to extend to an unreasonable length, I h0pe the Committee will remember that each of these gentlemen has principally confined himself to one or two particular points, whilst I, have to enter into them all; and that the complainants frequently make a general charge in a few words, the truth of which I can only enable the committee to judge of by examining it in detail.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details a discussion and analysis of the complaints brought against the 1849 'Amendment Act' that amended the constitution and arrangement of the University of Toronto, Canada. The author begins by providing a brief history of events leading up to the Amendment Act, highlighting that the original 1849 Act was repealed to remedy the lack of interest and participation from denominational colleges. The author goes on to address specific complaints raised by various groups, including the lack of equitable funding for affiliated colleges and the alleged extravagance of expenditures on the university and university college. The author provides a detailed breakdown of the university's expenditures, defending the costs associated with buildings, the library and museum, professorial salaries, and scholarships, by comparing them to similar institutions in Ireland and England. Lastly, the author addresses concerns about the lowering of academic standards, arguing that the university's matriculation and degree requirements are in line with the educational standards of the time and are necessary to ensure access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds. This thorough examination of the complaints against the Amendment Act and the author's thoughtful responses provide valuable insights into the challenges and considerations involved in shaping the higher education system in Canada.
