Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores high-energy, transmission X-ray diffraction (XRD), a nondestructive method for studying the solidification process of single crystal turbine blade castings. Researchers developed this technique and provide proof-of-concept experiments performed on aluminum, copper, and nickel alloy specimens. This method can map the location, shape, and extent of the liquid-dendrite-solid region (mushy zone) in a single-crystal casting. The technique successfully detected physical state changes of the casting and measured the solid fraction in the mushy zone using a real-time transmission Laue X-ray image. The authors received a patent on this solidification monitoring technique, which has far-reaching implications for improving the quality and reducing the cost of aerospace castings.
