This book is the culmination of the author's efforts to organize and distribute wild and domesticated grasses and forage plants for experimental use throughout America in the early 20th century. It documents the collection of over 130 varieties of grasses and forage plants and their distribution to agricultural experiment stations across the country, for use in research and development of better crops. These stations were tasked with testing the viability of these plants in soil and climate conditions specific to their regions, with the goal of solving common forage problems like alkali soil, winter pasturage, drought resistance, drifting sands, and soil erosion. This book sheds light on the critical advances in agricultural practices that took place in the early 20th century, particularly in the development of range improvement and sustainable farming techniques.
