Les choses humaines, qui évoluent graduellement, m'ont jamais passé par une transformation aussi subite et aussi profonde que celle qui s'est produite dans le domaine religieux au cours des années 1792-1799. La Réforme du XVI' siècle s'était gardée d'enfoncer twp profondément la hache et la cognée, parce qu'elle savait avoir besoin pour le nouvel édifice des fonda tions anciennes. Au contraire, pendant cette période de l'histoire de France, la Révolution religieuse eut la prétention de détruire jusque dans ses derniers vestiges tout ce qui était ancien; et, précisément à cause de cela, elle n'apporta, en ñu de compte, rien de nouveau elle aboutit à la restauration du passé.
