Excerpt from Engineering Studies, Vol. 1: American Stone Arches
This collection of photographic views of Engineering Works should be found valuable alike to the practicing engineer and to the student.
Short descriptions and criticisms are appended to point out the good and the bad features of the designs, with the view of bettering the character of future engineering structures. A stone arch is very often regarded as a work of art so aesthetic, that it cannot be injured in appearance bv care less detailing. Never was there a greater mistake than this, nor one more frequently made.
The intention is to bring out a number of parts forming a series which will include, in addition to stone arches, Bridge Approaches of Masonry, Bridge Towers and Portals, Notable Bridge Piers, Tunnel Portals and other engineering works of like character.
There will be six parts devoted to stone arches of several countries, and six or more parts devoted to miscellaneous structures.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an extensive compilation of photographic views of engineering works, designed to be of value to both the practicing engineer and the student. The author provides short descriptions and criticisms of the good and bad features of the designs, enhancing the book's educational aspects by highlighting successful and less effective design choices. The collection spans a wide range of engineering structures, including stone arch bridges, bridge towers, notable bridge piers, tunnel portals, and other structures of similar character. Each type of structure is given dedicated sections throughout the publication. The book draws on examples of historical and notable designs and provides insights into their architectural and engineering features, such as the daring design of the Grosvenor Bridge in England, which was built with an unusually wide span for its time, or the elegance of the Eden Park bridge in Cincinnati, Ohio, known for its pleasing proportions and ornamentation. The author emphasizes the importance of considering both the practical and aesthetic aspects of engineering, seeking to elevate the character of future constructions and inspire innovative yet enduring designs. This book serves as a valuable resource for engineers, architects, and students seeking to deepen their understanding and appreciation of both the technical and artistic aspects of engineering.
