Excerpt from Analytical Mass Spectrometry Section: Instrumentation and Procedures for Isotopic Analysis
This report summarizes the major works performed by the personnel of this section over the past eight years. It is primarily designed as a cookbook of analytical techniques for isotopic ratio measurements of various elements, and as a guide to the pitfalls encountered in attempts at very precise or accurate isotopic ratio measurements. The report fits the formal description of a Technical Note in the sense that the material is transient. The instrumentation is continuously being improved and modifications in analytical procedures, which might improve precision, are always being sought.

This book compiles decades of research conducted by scientists at the National Bureau of Standards in studying the isotopic compositions of silver, bromine, cesium, chlorine, chromium, copper, magnesium, plutonium, and uranium. The book describes the methodology developed and used by the team for arriving at accurate measurements of the isotopic ratios of these elements. The author provides detailed accounts of analytical procedures for each element tested and discusses the implications of the findings. Notably, the book discusses the effects of sample size, sample composition, and the impact of the specific equipment used for isotopic measurements. These insights are vital in establishing high accuracy absolute isotopic ratio standards necessary to precisely date rocks, meteorite, and archaeological artifacts.
